Description

Introduction

The notion of marriage in 18th century English society as depicted in Jane Austen’s pride and prejudice can be traced in 21 century Islamic societies. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was written during a period in France, when then country was in the centre of a vicious revolutionary turmoil and richly portrays social reaction to those happenings in England. Although the plot or theme of the book may be fictitious, the insight it provides is very tangible and accurate to events of real life. The events and characters in the book portray the evolutionary advancement in English society.

The people or society portrayed in Jane Austen’s Pride and prejudice highlights that the wealth, privilege and power of the old nobility during the era that the book was written were progressively caving in to the power and rising social prominence of the business class. Society during that period was evolving and included traces of social conformance very much like today’s society with regard to matters such as marriage, social status, women’s rights and the gap between the wealthy and poor class among others.  This research proposal aims to discuss the concept of marriage with reference to Jane Austen’s novel “pride and prejudice”. In doing so the research proposal highlights the different preferences and aspects in marriage today, linking Austen’s perceptions of various marriages with prevailing notions of marriage in Islamic societies today.
